Over the centuries the part of street that goes towards Via Guelfa, was populated with other noble palazzi, by many famous architects. A short walk will allow us to appreciate them. Across the street at number 2 is the large but somewhat insignificant Palazzo Pancciatichi, where the Regional Government has its offices today. Designed in 1696 by the Roman Francesco Fontana for Cardinal Bandino Panciatichi (1629-1718) it was finished in only three years under the supervision of the Florentine Antonio Ferri. Its monumental staircase leads to the corner where a Baroque tabernacle covers the copy of the Madonna with Child attributed to Desiderio da Settignano (the original can be found in the Bargello). The Palazzo includes, among other things, the house where Monsignor Giovanni della Casa (1503-1556) lived. The author of the authoritative book on good manners he has been rather impolitely forgotten as no inscription commemorates him. |
